Project 21: Finding materials

June 1, 2011

The Scrap Exchange

After seeing all of the fun things people were using to make their starburst mirrors I knew just where I needed to shop: the Scrap Exchange. Surely in this giant warehouse of reuse materials would be something inspirational. All I knew is I was looking for something sort of flat that I could paint if I wanted to.

I found these:

Metal strips

But they were too small.

Then I found these:

Dowels

But they looked like they’d be too difficult to attach a mirror to.

Finally, I spotted these:

Blinds

And I brought them home with me. They’re slats from blinds. I thought the holes could work to create a neat detail around the mirror. Tomorrow I’ll figure out how to put it all together.

A note about the Scrap Exchange:

I went on my shopping trip for this project in April. Just last week the Scrap Exchange had to vacate their building due to storm damage. They are closed this week as they move into a new home and they could really use some help. If you have a few spare moments today or tomorrow consider volunteering your time to help this great local nonprofit organization get set up in their new location. More details can be found here.
